Blanbrook Bison Farm was established in 1992. Both Bruce and Shirley were raised on dairy farms and wanted to raise alternative livestock on their 100 acre farm with their two children. After researching, visiting other bison farms and meeting people involved in the bison industry they purchased 13 bison from Sault Ste. Marie in May of 1992. The herd has since grown to over 100 bison. Farming can be challenging at times but is a very rewarding experience. We enjoy meeting customers and providing them with a quality, local and healthy product.
Everyone in the family has played a large roll in the success of the family farm from working on the farm to helping sell meat at the market on Saturday mornings. Of course the bison have also provided an excuse for a vacation or two. In 2004 we travelled across Western Canada in search of breeding stock. We also have gone to three International Bison Conferences: South Dakota, Quebec City and Montana. Bruce has attended the Canadian Bison Association conference in Regina, Saskatchewan for over 10 years.
We are regularly in touch with other bison producers and are fortunate to be apart of the CBA and OBA. Bruce and Shirley have been involved in the Canadian Bison Association and Ontario Bison Association for over 15 years volunteering as a CBA director, Bruce, and OBA secretary, Shirley. Now their daughter, Rebecca continues the OBA secretarial duties. The CBA is a very important part of promoting the bison industry in Canada and connecting, educating and supporting producers.
Now Bruce is retired from his day job and enjoys (most of the time at least) being a full time farmer. Shirley still continues to work part-time and go to the Covent Garden Market in London on Saturday mornings. Both of their children have grown up and moved out but stay involved in the farm.
